Solstice is the name of the first traveling Hipstamatic prints show. I've been a fan of the app since it got started and now Im working with them to put on their first show. Come check it out.

I was at the space earlier and its looking great. The show is being put on at CULTUREfix which is this cool malfunctioning space that has a beer and wine bar with light “tapas-style” foods and is also below digitalfix's second location.

It's hard to believe how long its been since I've posted. Work has gotten so crazy that I haven't had time to keep up with everything. This invitation is a prime example. My friend Danielle and I finished it last summer-we hand mounted 200 letter-pressed invitations to a pink flocked stock and then embossed their logo with a heat gun and thermography powder -she sent me this picture shortly after and I just came across it - It made me smile so I thought I would share.

As some of you know, I have been growing my mustache during the month of November to bring attention to the cancers that affect men. Think of it as a male version of October-breast cancer month.

I had this wonderful plan of sending out this official email to raise money once my mustache was big and burly. The kind you could attach a stick to and sweep the floors of time square after the ball drops. One reminiscent of the super hero that tormented my youth and had all the grammar school kids asking for my brother Luigi. Well we've hit the end of the month and still I have the sorriest excuse for a manly mustache :(

Its here... Movember... as in Moustache November... as in the month I grow out my moustache to raise awareness of cancers that affect men. I couldn't believe that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime and testicular cancer is the most common cancer in men aged 18-35. Money raised through Movember will go to organizations like The Lance Armstrong Foundation. To join my team or to donate check out my Mo'space.

This whole Movember thing has put moustaches on my brain. I'm loving these great mugs by Peter Ibruegger. He's totally NOT affiliated with the organization but they bring a smile to my face.

I don't claim to be a theater buff but Jude Law did an awesome job as Hamlet! He did a great job of keeping the show moving with high energy, though I can't say the same for the rest of the cast. It almost felt as though Jude was doing a contemporary spin on Hamlet while the rest of the cast was lost in traditional Shakespearean training... not bad but not as entertaining. Gugu Mbatha-Raw played Ophelia, and while her singing was fun, here character didn't really develop until she goes crazy and then she dies... but then again so does everyone else... sorry for the spoiler ;)

Overall it was fun and I definitely recommend going to see it. The theater is cold so bring a sweater... It might be an effect to relate the stage with the audience since its snowing on stage but that was probably just coincidence.

P.S. Can someone re-crop the photo of JL on the cover of the Playbill... the widows peak is distracting and it would look so much better if it would cut about half an inch down :)

Take this tea kettle from Vessel Ideation. The pixel art on it is cool but you don't get to see it till the pot is hot which is also the indication that your water is the right temperature.

Welcome to an evening of pouring prosecco, hanging with lovely people and enjoying a much needed laugh. I volunteered tonight at illustrator/writer Maira Kalman's Small Talk for AIGA/NY. This was one of those lectures where I left feeling good. It wasn't long and she didn't repeat what I already know about design.
I left wanting to take a daily walk and be inspired by something at the moment. She mentioned the newness in found objects and it really made me think of how much I overlook on a daily basis. She quoted a postcard she found and so I will leave you with this::

Last Thursday I had the privilege of checking out MAD with some of the AIGA crowd and enjoyed the current exhibition "SECOND LIVES - REMIXING THE ORDINARY" ending April 19.

They didn't let me take pictures but Core77 has some shots for you to check out but I would strongly encourage going to see it. The gallery has "pay what you want" Thursday nights ending at 9pm ;)

My chocolates just dropped at Bloomingdale's! Its a luxury line of a bookcase with 5 different chocolates (also sold separately) and a small drawer with little chocolate squares. They were months in the making and I had stopped believing they were ever going to come to existence. They taste great so go get some :)

I promise to get some better pictures in the future but I was too excited to wait.

AIGA: The Dinner Party

Tonight was AIGA's event to recognize the relationship between Design and Restaurants. The lectures were great but the best was learning about Foie Gras from Dan Barber, who became aware that some foods are an insult to history.
Matteo Bologna, of Mucca Design, did a great job of speaking while having his jaw wired shut from a recent "old New York" enconter. His lecture on the multiple logos of Pastis and the vintage look of Balthazar and Pravda remained the same as when he spoke in Stevens Point while incorporating some new projects.

Focus Features rarely disappoints and the little sneak peaks for this movie are so great. The attention to detail on the puppets is insane. Coraline was made by hand and is the first in its kind to be filmed in 3D. To view the little clips you have to enter a passcode. Visionaire issue 55 titled Surprise, raises the bar on Fashion Pop-up books. It's a collection of hard-cover pop up images by photographers Steven Meisel, Mario Testino, Steven Klein, Sophie Calle, Andreas Gursky, Cai Guo-Qiang, Guido Mocafico, S0lve Sundsb0, Yayoi Kusama, Gareth Pugh and Alasdair McLellan. So great!

Last year Neiman Marcus created a pop-up book for their 100th anniversary that also received a lot of hype and was released during the Holiday 2007 season.
As a kid I was in love with Origami and Pop-up books. The thought of adding dimension to paper is so cool to me, hence why I am loving this trend in Fashion :)

Every season I spend hours online trying to understand trends and colors from the runways. I look at color reports along with tons of other blogs/websites for a recap of whats buzzing. Everyone starts summarizing the collections by making list with words that seem to constantly repeat but I have to say that I love this chart from The Wall Street Journal on the trends - you can even mouse over the individual looks for more information- genius :)

I love the idea that the simplest shapes can be absolutely beautiful when taken out of context. In Jim Denevan's case, its the scale and the medium that makes his work (which is almost primitive) so impressive. This is proof to me that I've lost my faith in patience because if I didn't know the artist I would have to assume it is some sort of extra-terrestrial contact.

Its Begining to Look a Lot like Christmas

Walking out of the office today, I noticed that the trees and lights were going up and I have to say I love the holidays. It inspired me to take a walk over to the stores on 5th Ave and Bloomingdale's and check out the windows... I know I'm a little early but it made me smile

Favorite windows award goes to Bergdorf Goodman. They made me realize how much I love monochromatic maximalism... not to mention the albino peacocks.

I was the Junior Art Director and type designer on this shoot for Bloomingdale's by Martyn Thompson and randomly ran into it on a few other blogs today. I know its only because of model Tyler Kenyon's recent hype for the perfect body story in L'officiel Homme's Winter issue but its cool to know that I had something to do with it. You can find this 6 page insert in the December issue of Men's Health.

2008 AMA in 500 pictures.... its nice to be able to visually summarize the whole thing. I loved how formal most of the male artist were dressed. My favorite male look of the night was on Chris Brown :)
